  • Overexposure to the sun, use of hair-styling products, contact with chlorinated water are some of the common causes of dry and damaged hair
  • Rinsing hair with cool water instead of hot also retains moisture in the hair
  • Applying butter on the hair keeps them shiny

Dry hair is one of the common causes that lead to baldness. Hair fall happens when hair is not able to retain enough moisture which makes it look lacklustre, fragile and brittle. Even if not a major health issue, poor-quality hair certainly is a cause of concern as it can directly affect one's confidence and thus self-esteem but guess what, it's also avoidable. Washing hair too often, overexposure to the sun, use of hair-styling products, contact with chlorinated water and smoking, all contribute to dry and damaged hair.

Here are some easily-available and affordable methods that will make your hair thick, glossy and manageable.

Home remedies to treat dry and damaged hair

1. Have butter

On dry hair, apply some butter and massage well. Cover the hair with a shower cap for about half-an-hour and then wash it with a shampoo nicely so that all the butter washes off.

2. Using hair oils

For dry hair, olive oil is one of the best treatments. Apart from olive oil, coconut, almond, corn oil may also be used for good results. All these oils are rich in Vitamin E and antioxidants which revive the moisture in the outer layer of hair.

To follow this treatment, heat half a cup of oil but don't boil it. Massage the oil gently on to your hair and cover with a towel. Leave it for 30-40 minutes or overnight. After this rinse your hair with a shampoo.

This remedy can strengthen the hair and make it look shiny.

3. Applying yoghurt and oil mask

The combination of yoghurt and oil is a very effective treatment for your dry hair. To try this, in half a cup of yoghurt, add two tablespoons of olive oil and six tablespoons of essential oil. This mixture should be applied to shampooed hair. Cover the hair with plastic or shower cap for 15-20 minutes. After that, rinse hair thoroughly with warm water.

4. Avocado paste

Avocado is rich in Vitamin A and E, minerals and saturated fats. All these nutrients are good for dry hair and make them strong and moisturised.

For this treatment, mash a peeled avocado and mix it with one egg. Apply this mixture on your hair and let it stay for 20 minutes. After that, wash your hair multiple times.

5. Banana

Bananas are rich in moisture and potassium which make them effective for dry hair. Split ends, softening of hair and elasticity can be improved with the use of banana on hair.

Mash one ripe banana. Apply it on hair, from roots to ends. Leave it for one hour and then wash the hair with warm water.

6. Wash your hair with tea

Apart from giving relief from cold and cough, tea can make your hair shine too. But remember, the colour of tea can change your hair colour too. So those with blonde hair might want to avoid black tea and use chamomile tea instead. Brunettes can use black tea.

After shampooing your hair, rinse with lukewarm tea.

7. Add egg to your shampoo

Take one egg, break it in a bowl and mix it with some shampoo. Apply this directly on your dry hair for five minutes and rinse well. This will improve the protein content of your hair.

8. Egg mask

Use egg directly on your dry hair. You can also add in half a cup of fat yoghurt, one egg and three tablespoons of honey. Apply this mixture on your hair and cover for 15-30 minutes. After that, rinse your hair with a shampoo.

9. Increase the intake of omega-3s and antioxidants in your diet

Protein from marine animals keep the hair thick and shiny. Eating salmon, sardines, tuna and oysters will give you that essential omega-3s for your hair.

Adding oxidants to your diet is also good for dry hair. Walnuts, broccoli, tomatoes, blueberries and kidney beans are ideal.

10. Applying Apple cider vinegar mask

Apple cider vinegar is also a very effective treatment for dry hair. To one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar add two tablespoons of olive oil and three egg whites. The mixture should be applied to the hair. Keep the hair covered for half-an-hour, then rinse it with shampoo.

In addition to these remedies, here are some precautions that are necessary to avoid dry hair. Don't excessively use hair-styling products, avoid direct contact with chlorinated water in the swimming pool. Also, avoid washing your hair daily and instead rinse them every few days. Trim hair frequently to avoid split ends. Rinse your hair with cool water instead of warm as it seals the cuticles and reduces moisture loss.
